Conference Registration – Now Open!

After two years of hosting our annual conference in a virtual format, we’re excited to announce we’ll be back, live and in person, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the National Résumé Writers Association.

The NRWA is planning for a big event in the Big Easy! In addition to our diverse educational programming, we will be bringing our conference to life with two featured keynote speakers, the return of an in-depth preconference event, and many opportunities for networking.

There will be plenty of time to get to know colleagues during our jazz-infused 25th anniversary celebration event Sunday evening in the courtyard at the Royal Sonesta. Later that evening, we’ve made it easy to schedule dinner with our dine-around sign-up option, or you’re free to explore the French Quarter on your own. We’ve also planned a choice of two optional excursions for Monday evening, including a dinner cruise on the Creole Queen or a two-hour walking tour of the French Quarter’s most infamous and eerie locations with the world-renowned Haunted History Tour company.

General conference programming kicks off with our first Keynote on September 18 at 1:00 p.m., CT and ends with our closing Keynote on Tuesday September 20 by 2:00 p.m., CT.

Membership Contest & Membership Drive

Members: Can you use a $50 Amazon gift card? That’s the 2nd quarter Membership Contest Grand Prize.

The NRWA is switching things up a bit for the 2nd Quarter. We are combining the member contest with our annual membership drive. And you don’t have to create anything to win!

The NRWA’s best advocates are our members, so we are having a membership drive event on Wednesday, May 11th. To enter the contest, invite guests you think would be great additions to the NRWA. Your name will go into a drawing for the $50 Amazon gift card if the person attends the event.

As an incentive for guests, the first 35 guests to register AND attend will receive 30-day access to “Writing Board of Director Resumes: How to Position Your Executive Clients to Win Board Seats,” which Michelle Dumas delivered at the 2021 NRWA Conference.

To end the year on a high note (pun intended), the NRWA 4th Quarter Contest combines music and personal branding.

The “Personal Brand Song” contest will run now through December 31, 2021. As always, all entries win bragging rights, and the best submission wins a $25 Amazon gift card.

The contest guidelines are simple. Tell us what song represents your personal brand.

Provide the name of the song and artist and explain why you chose this song. Is it the words, the music, or what the song reminds you of or represents? One submission per member. Please choose a song that will be at least somewhat familiar and limit your “why” to 250 words.

Over the past few months, NRWA leaders have been working closely with our strategic marketing partners on a series of initiatives designed to advance the organization and fulfill our mission-driven commitment to increase the visibility of both the NRWA and the overall resume writing industry.

At the same time, we’ve been engaged in thoughtful reflection and discussion about how our organization has evolved over the past quarter of a century. Our updated brand identity – which encompasses the NRWA, NCRW, and NCOPE logos – was designed to reflect our growth and progression as an organization and complement our strategic efforts to meet the new challenges that lie ahead.

In the coming weeks and months, you will begin to see other new initiatives and approaches take shape toward these critical goals. We will seek your input and feedback as we move forward and we hope you’ll join us in forging ahead.

In the meantime, we are retiring the old NRWA logo so please be sure to update all materials – including websites, LinkedIn profiles, email signature blocks, brochures, business cards – using the new logo that shows that you are a proud member of the NRWA!

If you're already a member, you know how valuable it is to have other members who you can rely on to answer your questions and/or come to your aid.

Throughout March, referring new members to the NRWA will give you added benefits!

Any member who refers someone to the NRWA will receive one free live or on-demand webinar of their choice for each referral who joins the association. As a bonus, all members who refer one or more new members will be entered into a drawing for a free 1-year NRWA membership.

Throughout December we are hosting a campaign to encourage members to update their NRWA Member Profile and qualify for one of two monetary prizes!

On Friday, December 4 we hosted a live demo of the profile content and privacy settings, with recommendations for what to include and why, and details on how you can enter a drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card and nominate your completed profile for the “Most Robust” competition and a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card.

NRWA Conference Update

The results are in – the 2020 Annual Conference is going VIRTUAL

Coronavirus has proven to be an unexpected health crisis and has caused many changes to short and long-term plans for us all. After much research and discussion, we have made the official decision to transition the NRWA 2020 Annual Conference to a virtual format.

I know this format will not replace the experience of attending in-person. However, I am optimistic that we can all use this as an opportunity to embrace change and adapt with emerging technology to keep us all connected. What I am most excited about is the opportunity to reach more members by removing the burdens of travel and lodging, while increasing conference accessibility to all. The virtual format will also allow us to provide registrants access to all education session recordings for three weeks following the conference.

Using the results and feedback of our membership survey, we are redesigning a conference experience that will deliver the quality content and interactive networking that we all enjoy and expect from our beloved annual NRWA event. We have already reached out to all our selected speakers and confirmed 95% retention of our original line-up. Click here to see the results of membership survey.

We are working hard to bring you a seamless and engaging virtual conference and are excited by the overwhelming interest of our members to join us for this inaugural event. In the meantime, I would like to personally thank the Conference Planning Committee, Stringfellow Management, and most of all our amazing membership for everyone’s valuable input and support. I am grateful for our NRWA community and look forward to seeing your smiling faces at our upcoming conference.

Dear members,

As the first step of a member-driven effort to address issues of racial injustice and inequality, the Board of Directors of the National Resume Writers' Association is sharing this statement. The board will meet this week to discuss a further plan of action and next steps toward the goal of a more inclusive organization.

Our clients, our friends, our families, and our colleagues are hurting. If the events of the last few days have taught us anything—it is that.

It is also clear that many of our members looked to NRWA leaders to take a public stance against racism, and we did not. Many of us assumed it went without saying that we abhor racism in any shape or form.

Through your comments and actions, we have seen how our assumptions were incorrect and added to your pain—and for that we are profoundly sorry.

Let us now be clear. The NRWA stands against racism and violence. We stand with our colleagues, clients, and communities of color and believe there is no place for racism in our organization, our industry, our workplaces, or in the world around us. Black lives matter!

We believe everyone deserves to be judged on their merits, talents, skills, and character, and not the color of their skin.

Please know we are listening to you, and we will keep listening. We vow to continue learning. We vow to be more inclusive. We vow to do better.

Individual and unconscious bias and – as an extension – diversity and inclusion are important issues that we must unpack and discuss. These issues, and systemic racism, affect people of color throughout their job search and beyond. Conversations are taking place and awareness is now heightened that prejudices still exist in 2020. Unchecked actions and glossed-over, biased comments got us here, but accountability, deep introspection, hard conversations, and specific actions will help us move forward.

As career practitioners, we must learn as much as we can so we can help our clients navigate and succeed in these murky waters, and we as an organization support messaging that challenges the status quo and will use our industry influence to directly affect change through initiatives that are being developed in real time. We are a volunteer-led organization, and in this capacity, we are holding discussions regarding our best path forward. We value your feedback as members during this process.

Black lives are getting a long-overdue spotlight, and we must play our part to amplify the message that systemic racism must end. Then we can begin to heal.

Virtual Business Talk: Advice for new business owners

In one of our recent Virtual Business Talks, NRWA Past President Mary Jo King, provided some great advice for new business owners during these unpredictable times. Click here for more information on our weekly Virtual Meetings. Here is some of the information she shared:

What would you advise a new business owner, or one who is seeing a dramatic drop in business, to do?

a. Don’t give up! People will get their feet underneath them again and business will return. It always does. Our industry can thrive in recession, too.

b. Offer a resume update or LinkedIn profile service to previous clients.

c. Apply for unemployment or other government assistance as eligible.*

d. Reduce your overhead. It doesn’t have to be permanent, but cut all services you don’t absolutely need. Renegotiate debt and contract terms.

e. Increase your sales average with add-on products or services (LinkedIn SEO, mock phone interview, tip sheets).

f. Raise your visibility by freshening website content, blogging, posting helpful information on LinkedIn/social media, and updating your Google My Business (GMB) page.

g. Use the time to upskill by preparing for your NCRW or taking other NRWA training.

h. Build your local network by volunteering your copywriting skills to your favorite nonprofits, who are adjusting a lot of their messaging right now.

i. Prepare for more disruption in the fall. Ask your insurance agent about business interruption insurance.

j. Consider using retirement savings to get by for now if you have the intestinal fortitude for it. I did, back in 2010 and I’ve never been sorry.

* In addition, the Treasury Department is deferring tax payments without interest or penalties for certain individuals and businesses negatively impacted. Those who are self-employed get paid sick leave in the form of a tax credit.

Across America, various cities are offering financial aid to specifically help small businesses. Cities like New York will offer no-interest loans to small businesses with fewer than 100 employees that show a reduction in sales since the coronavirus outbreak. Certain cities are also providing grants of up to $6,000 for businesses with fewer than five employees. Freelancers can access this information and see if they qualify through their city’s Small Business Administration office.

Step 1: Choose your experience level so your entries will be judged against your peers.

Experienced Writers (more than 5 years of experience)
New Writers (up to 5 years of experience)

Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the categories.

Creative Design: Think color and formatting. Judges will be evaluating the visual elements as well as the content… Is your resume visually exciting to look at while still delivering solid content, strong strategy, and ease of reading? Use your imagination, but make sure the resume promotes the candidate’s talent, not just a fun design.
Modern Classic: This resume will have a familiar, yet strategic structure and layout. Fonts will be standard, sections will align with broadly accepted best practices, and layout will enable reader to immediately find information often looked for by recruiters. Judges will be evaluating strategy, content, ease of reading, and spacing/layout.

Step 3: Select up to three of your BEST resumes representing any industry or profession for each of the two categories (up to six entries per contestant). Fictionalize all names, addresses, and company names and prepare a strategy statement for each entry.

Step 4: Familiarize yourself with all the guidelines and judging criteria. (http://www.thenrwa.com/ROAR-contest-2018) and submit your entries. Just $20 per entry for members and $40 per entry for non-members.

Registration is now open for the 2018 NRWA Conference in Seattle, Oct. 4-6. The program features more than 24 sessions, focusing on resume writing and design, content development, job search techniques, sales and marketing strategies, additional profit centers, branding, business management topics, and more. You’ll learn cutting-edge ideas and insights that will help you serve your clients today while preparing for the future of job search.
