Executive Greeting

Nancy Grant

Nancy Grant
NRWA Conference Program Chair

Dear Colleagues,

As the countdown to Conference ticks away, it’s hard to believe the time is almost here. Who knew 5 years ago when I attended my first National Resume Writer’s Association Conference as a “newbie” that I would be Charting a Course for Success for all members of the NRWA. Taking on challenges, growing professionally, and building our tribe is what we are all about, and I am honored to be a part of delivering this exclusive and enriching Conference at Sea experience.

For those attending, I cannot wait to meet you personally if I have not already. Please make sure to connect with attendees on one of our many social media forums and then book optional excursions using Royal Caribbean’s cruise planner. For those not attending this year, we will miss you for sure, but keep a look out as we will be sharing our experiences via social media to keep you in the loop.

Best wishes to everyone and enjoy the rest of your summer.

See you on board!

Volunteer of the Month - Ashley Watkins

Paul Bennett
NRWA Director of Member Support: New Business Owners (Eastern Region)

Ashley is a Job Search Coach and owner of Write Step Résumés, LLC. Previously, she spent 15 years in corporate recruiting for the banking, manufacturing, nonprofit, and education sectors. Ashley is originally from Montgomery, AL, and graduated with a BS in Human Resources Management from Auburn University at Montgomery. As Alabama’s only NCRW, Ashley earned her NCRW designation in 2016. Currently, she serves on the NRWA Board as the Sponsor/Affiliate Relations Chair.

Ashley’s company offers high-quality career documents and services that generate more interviews and higher salary offers for job seekers who are ready to advance or who feel stuck in a dead-end job. She gives them the boost they need to confidently present their brand promise and communicate their value.

Tell us a little bit about yourself - for example, what's the name of your business, and what types of clients do you typically work with.

At Write Step Résumés, I partner with frustrated mid-career to executive-level job seekers. I teach them leading-edge job search strategies for overcoming networking anxiety, articulately communicating their career stories, and confidently showcasing (in their resumes and LinkedIn profiles and during interviews) their unique value to potential employers.

How did you first get involved with the NRWA?

I joined the NRWA after launching my business in 2012. One quick Google search changed my career outlook. I didn’t know much about resume writers and wanted to ensure I was doing all that I could to help my clients rediscover the impact in their careers so they could market themselves to employers as top talent and command top-dollar salaries. I think I immediately purchased about 15 courses from the webinar library, and I consistently studied to refine my writing and coaching strategies.

What prompted you to participate as the Sponsor/Affiliate Relations Chair?

After taking the plunge into full-time entrepreneurship in 2019, I set a goal (with my mentor) to become more involved in the careers industry and gain more visibility among my peers. When I was approached about the opportunity to serve on the board, it felt like the perfect way to leverage my skills in recruiting, nonprofit fundraising, and relationship building to make a bigger impact with NRWA sponsors and affiliates.

What do you wish others knew about the benefits of getting involved with the NRWA?

Since joining, I have benefited tremendously from educational tools such as webinars, forums, books, and the Writing Excellence Course. With The NRWA, you don’t just pay dues and attend boring training calls; coaches and writers actually come together to share ideas and knowledge to consistently drive the careers industry forward. The networking opportunities and open Q&A sessions alone were enough to boost sales and efficiency in my business. Volunteering is an amazing way to have your ideas heard (and implemented) while giving back to an organization dedicated to presenting a positive public image and excellence in writing, coaching, and job search strategies.

What might someone be surprised to know about you? What do you do when you aren't working or volunteering?

I was the co-host of a radio show (for about 7 years) and of a TV show (for 6 months). We discussed a wide range of topics including politics, sports, and current events. I collect shoe figurines and get lost for hours in coloring books and Dr. Pimple Popper YouTube videos. I'm also a die-hard football fan (Roll Tide! and Who Dat!).
