Career Storytelling for the Next Generation: Teaching Students to Communicate Skills, Impact & Professional Identity

College students often struggle with the same challenge: they don’t know how to talk about themselves. Whether they’re writing a résumé, preparing for a career fair, or practicing interview answers, the real hurdle isn’t formatting or finding the “right” action verb—it’s learning how to articulate what they’ve done, why it matters, and what value they bring.

In this one-hour professional development session, we’ll explore a practical, repeatable approach to helping students uncover meaningful experiences, translate them into clear accomplishments, and confidently express their career story across résumés, LinkedIn, and interviews. This call blends communication strategy with résumé-writing best practices—providing career advisors, coaches, and center directors with ready-to-use tools they can implement immediately.

Participants will learn:

  • A simple Career Story Framework that helps students identify strengths, goals, and themes in their background
  • Techniques for turning campus jobs, class projects, research, leadership roles, and even part-time retail work into strong résumé accomplishments
  • How to coach students to develop compelling STAR stories before interview season hits
  • Strategies for building a consistent narrative across résumés, LinkedIn profiles, and elevator pitches
  • A short, classroom-ready activity that helps students practice story-driven bullet writing
  • Examples of how to transform vague, generic student résumé lines into specific, high-impact statements

This session is ideal for career services professionals, advisors, faculty, and anyone involved in preparing students for internships, early-career roles, and professional communication. Attendees will leave with tangible templates, scripts, and tools they can use immediately to guide students toward stronger, more confident career communication.
